Think of clay
particles as little magnets in the soil. In salty soil, the
magnets repel each other and limit water movement. In low salt
soil the magnets hold clumps of particles together, which leaves
air pockets to both hold water and allow it to travel through.
Note that the ground doesn't have to be heavy. Sandy soils can
also be salty and suffer the same problems.
