Think of clay particles as little magnets in the soil. In salty soil, the magnets repel each other and limit water movement. In low salt soil the magnets hold clumps of particles together, which leaves air pockets to both hold water and allow it to travel through. Note that the ground doesn't have to be heavy. Sandy soils can also be salty and suffer the same problems. CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE

It's as simple as this. Gypsum will "open up" your soil so that water and nutrients can move freely, providing moisture and nourishment to the roots.
